Sylvia Consults: Science-Based Leadership for Conservation

I’m Dr. Sylvia Atsalis, a primate ecologist now dedicated to developing the next generation of conservation leaders. My approach bridges science, strategy, and mentorship to equip emerging professionals with the clarity, confidence, and resilience needed to protect biodiversity and create lasting impact.

My career spans from pioneering research on Madagascar’s nocturnal lemurs as a National Geographic Scholar, to NIH-funded studies on menopause in aging female gorillas, to leading programs globally in professional growth and mentorship. As a Fulbright Scholar in Suriname—one of the most forested countries in the world—I conduct research and teach Environmental Science and Biology students.

Over the years, I have taught, trained, and mentored hundreds of students and young professionals across Asia, Africa, South America, and the United States—including at the City University of New York, the University of Chicago, and Northeastern Illinois University—many of whom now work in science, policy, conservation, and social service.

Today, my focus is on empowering young people and NGO teams to protect wildlife and biodiversity.

As founder of Professional Development for Good (PD4G) and Conservation Masterminds, I equip emerging conservation leaders with clarity, confidence, and skills to create impact.

My holistic approach blends neuroscience, mindfulness, and storytelling with behavioral ecology and anthropology. I help emerging leaders recognize their strengths, make better decisions, and build the resilience and perspective needed to address complex challenges
